We moved to Alaska in 1995, after semi-retiring from careers in Texas, in search of a new lifestyle and to experience ONE Alaskan winter. This winter was spent as lodge sitters at a wilderness lodge across Kachemak Bay from Homer. It was the first time in our lives that we lived away from any road system, as the lodge was accessible only by boat or helicopter. It also was the first time that we lived in a one-room cabin and without plumbing. The spectacular scenery, the remoteness, and the simplicity was all we had hoped for except for the fact that we had moved to the "banana belt" of Alaska. Temperatures never dipped below zero degrees Fahrenheit during that winter.

So we decided to move north in search of the 'real' Alaskan winter. We found what we were looking for in Cantwell, a small Interior community just south of the entrance to Denali National Park. There, winters were long enough and cold enough to keep us indoors for just enough time to allow for the beginning of our writing and publishing careers. Starting in 1998 with one book, an Alaskan wildlife bandanna, and some sewing products, our little cottage business has now grown to include more than 30 children's books, a card game, two Alaska bandanna designs, and two puzzles.
